The Great Survivors is the sixth and final episode in the BBC series Planet Dinosaur. It shows the dinosaurs' extraordinarily good survival adaptions, how they evolved and how they eventually died out and became extinct (dinosaurs are not truly extinct because as John Hurt said in Feathered Dragons, birds are dinosaurs). It was first broadcasted on 19 October 2011.

Plot[]

The episode begins with a herd of Magyarosaurus eating plants. A Bradycneme hunts lizards. A group of Hatzegopteryx land on the ground and start eating baby Magyarosaurus.

The episode then cuts to North America, 92 million years ago. A Suskityrannus was first seen drinking from a lake. The tyrannosaurid attacks a Nothronychus and the two engage in a vicious fight but the herbivore drives off the Suskityrannus with its long, sharp claws. Later, a pair of Nothronychus are attacked by a pack of Suskityrannus. The Suskityrannus land multiple bites on the Nothronychus, which fights back and slashing the Suskityrannus with its claws. After a bloody battle, the therizinosaurs again drive off the tyrannosaurids. The Suskityrannus pack decides to eat the carcass of the other Suskityrannus. Later, all the Suskityrannus die. It is revealed that the water by the lake and the carcasses are infected by a disease which will kill anything that eats it.

The episode then cuts to Mongolia, 7 million years later. An Alectrosaurus was first seen scaring a flock of Oviraptorids. A female Gigantoraptor and her mate guard their nest from predators. The female leaves the male with the nest, presumably to find food. After a rainstorm, the male is attacked by a pair of Alectrosaurus. A Oviraptor raids the nest but the male Gigantoraptor drives off the Alectrosaurus pair and scares off the Oviraptor without losing any eggs. However, he is later buried during a sandstorm, still guarding his nest.

The episode then cuts to 65 million years ago. A gigantic asteroid crashes into the Gulf of Mexico, causing devastation upon impact, filling the atmosphere with debris, causing lots of volcano eruptions, earthquakes, floods and impacting the survival of all dinosaurs living at that time like Ankylosaurus, Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus. After a few weeks, Alamosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Troodon, Dromaeosaurus, Ornithomimus, Edmontosaurus, Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus went extinct. Four months later on Hațeg Island after the K-T event, most vegetation has died because of the lack of sunlight, starving the Magyarosaurus and other herbivores. Scavengers do well for the time being, with a group of Hatzegopteryx driving a Bradycneme away from a carcass. Bradycneme is forced to hunt lizards. Off-screen, all the remaining dinosaurs on Earth died. The episode ends with a montage of various creatures featured throughout the preceding episodes, with the narrator saying that dinosaurs are the most successful group of animals ever to exist on earth, and that it was "an unprecedented extraterrestrial event that finally saw the end of Planet Dinosaur."
