Saurophaganax (name meaning "lord of lizard-eaters") is a dubious, chimeric genus of saurischian dinosaur that lived in North America during the Late Jurassic period.

Facts[]

Saurophaganax was one the largest Jurassic theropods to ever exist, measuring in at 12 meters in length. Compared to contemporary theropods, such as Allosaurus, it easily outclassed them in terms of size and weight. Due to its similarity to Allosaurus, some scientists have suggested that Saurophaganax is a large species of Allosaurus, known as Allosaurus maximus.

Fight for Life[]

Saurophaganax was briefly seen confronting an Allosaurus after the latter took down Camptosaurus. The Allosaurus stood its ground and tried to defend its kill, but after the Saurophaganax bit its head, the Allosaurus was forced to back down, allowing the Saurophaganax to steal its kill.

Trivia[]

  • Saurophagonax reuses the Allosaurus model used in the show, though it is much larger and sports a different color scheme.
    • In the Planet Dinosaur companion book, the Saurophaganax color scheme is used for the Allosaurus render used on the Allosaurus page.
  • Planet Dinosaur is the first time Saurophaganax appeared in any sort of media following its appearance in the 2008 Japanese anime show, Dinosaur King.
  • In December of 2024, a reassessment of Saurophagonax by Danison et al. revealed that Saurophagonax was likely a chimera of multiple dinosaur genera.
    • The holotype neural arch and several referred specimens were found to belong to sauropods, likely Diplodocidae, while the allosaurid material referred to the genus were found to belong to a new species of Allosaurus, which they named Allosaurus anax.
